An Outlander Inspired Wedding at Myres Castle

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will be familiar with the hit TV-series ‘Outlander’! The show is based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon and is filmed a few miles away in historic farmland. It follows the story of a married former World War II nurse who is transported back to Scotland in 1740 where she meets a handsome Highland warrior. The team at Myres Castle are obsessed with the show and have compiled our favourite Outlander inspired wedding ideas! Whether you love the show or have never even heard of it, there are some fantastic style tips you can incorporate within your wedding.

Scottish bouquets

Bouquets are potentially one of the most personal touches at a wedding as it’s symbolic to the brides good luck and happiness on her wedding day (and then sometimes throwing it into the crowd to then pass on this same good fortune) so why not take the opportunity to add a touch or your heritage or just some Outlander inspired flowers to it? We have seen the most beautiful bouquets which have been made up of heather, thistle and lavender and they really do stand out from the rest and of course smell amazing!

Tartan throughout

The groom and male guests wearing tartan kilts has always been a scottish tradition, but why stop there? Tartan is a beautiful pattern which once again represents a person’s identity and their family name. We have seen weddings that have tartan table runners, ribbons around the bouquets and even the cake and family tartan cloth featured within centrepieces and it’s such a lovely touch (plus it photographs really well). Additionally, what a nicer way to symbolise two families coming together than by incorporating both family tartans throughout the wedding day and decor?

Scottish Wedding Cake

Not only can you decorate your cake with tartan to make it ‘Scottish’, you can actually use delicious fruit cake recipes and really bring the Outlander theme to your guests taste buds! Whether you are taking inspiration from the famous ‘Dundee Cake’ or pinching ideas from the traditional ‘Scottish Fruit Loaf’ recipe there are plenty of ways to add a touch of Outlander to your wedding cake. Of course, taste is crucial but decor holds an equal importance, and we have seen the most gorgeous themed wedding cakes over the years at Myres Castle. Why not drape your cake in tartan, or decorate it with beautiful scottish flowers etc. and really incorporate the Outlander theme within your special day?

Custom made rings

One thing Scotland is not short of is talent, which is why we have found more and more couples are going to local Scottish jewellers and getting custom made rings for their special day - a lot of which are Scottish inspired. This, in our opinion is the most special touch to an Outlander inspired wedding as this will be a part of your wedding that will be with you forever to remind you of your wedding day. Whether you are getting a special message carved into the inside of your ring or having a celtic pattern design on your band there are so many ways to incorporate this theme.
